United Veterans Beacon House recently celebrated the completion of its Champions for Veterans leadership program, a six week initiative that engages high school students in meaningful service while introducing them to the work behind mission driven organizations.

Throughout the program, participants were given an inside look at the nonprofit sector and the many disciplines required to advance a mission. In addition to learning about the needs facing veterans across Long Island, students explored the roles professionals play in making this work possible, including accounting, marketing, development, compliance, legal oversight, and program operations. These perspectives help students understand that impactful service requires a wide range of skills and leadership.

Participants also collaborated with members of the Beacon House Next Gen Professional Committee and took part in guided conversations with members of the organization’s Board of Directors, providing a valuable opportunity to learn directly from community leaders and professionals.

Each student developed and carried out their own fundraising campaign in support of veterans served by Beacon House. During weekly meetings, participants shared ideas, refined their strategies, and strengthened their skills in leadership, networking, and collaboration while engaging their communities in support of a meaningful cause.

By the conclusion of the program, the students had collectively raised $9,000 to support veterans in crisis.

The initiative concluded with a Champions for Veterans Luncheon, where students were recognized alongside their families, members of the Beacon House Board of Directors, and community supporters. Each participant received a Champions for Veterans scholarship in recognition of their leadership and commitment to service.

Programs like Champions for Veterans help cultivate the next generation of community leaders while strengthening the connection between young people and the mission to support those who served our country.
